Hamilton County School facilities and recommendations to improve them continue to be a hot topic.

Wednesday, the Hamilton County Commission passed a resolution to extend a pause in funding for an elementary school that will likely close.

The funding, which is about $1.5 million that comes from the American Rescue Plan, has been set aside for the Hamilton County School system to use for Rivermont Elementary.

Hamilton County School officials are still working to finalize a facilities plan, which will likely result in the closing of Rivermont.

The commission set a new deadline of February 29, to allow school officials time to finalize a plan for facilities and determine the future of Rivermont.

"All we're doing is moving the deadline to a more attainable date. To give everyone an opportunity to come to the table and have these discussions that are already going on," said District 11 Commissioner Joe Graham.

The money was originally meant to fund a multipurpose center, including a gymnasium at Rivermont Elementary.

A vote on the school facilities plan is expected in January.

The next school board meeting to discuss the facilities plan is set for January 4.
